Non-Toxic Gardening!

When dealing with an outdoor garden you will attract bugs, that is the way of things. No doubt one of the reasons you are growing foods are to avoid harmful pesticides and chemicals. I know that is why we are doing this!

This is the first year that we can really grow how we want, but we have experimented over the years. Here are some recipes we have played with and at least so far really like! Since we have incorporated essential oils in our daily life it makes sense to add them in our garden. I use only Young Living oils because I trust them, but feel free to use one of the other reputable companies if you prefer. I know these recipes work with Young Living but I can’t vouch for others.

Bugger off my Plant!

  • 8 oz Apple Cider Vinegar, Witch Hazel, or Vodka (Your choice mix as needed.  Keep in mind some plants do not like Vinegar. I use a Vodka & Witch Hazel mix.)
  • 3 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 3 drops citronella essential oil
  • 15 drops Idaho Balsam Fir essential oil
  • 25 drops orange essential oil
  • 25 drops cedarwood essential oil

Mix everything in a glass spray bottle. Roll the bottle in your hands to mix. Do this each time you use it. If you have a bigger garden you may need more than this makes. You can add coffee to the mix as well as plants really love that!

Spray the soil around the plants, and if needed you can spray the plant itself, but plants really don’t like leaves sprayed. We use this about once a week, or after it rains. You do not want to use it too often because overuse can harm the plant.

Just realized how empty this bottle is! I guess I will need to make more!

Bugger out my Yard!

First, you have to make what I call the Flea Bomb (AKA Flea TNT).

  • 50 drops Flea bomb
  • 4 oz Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 4 oz Coffee

Store in the refrigerator so the coffee does not go bad. This is for infestations in your yard, like fire ants. It will also deter cats and other animals from messing with your plants. Mix before each use, and I would not spray this on the plant. Since we focus on container gardens we spray the outside of the box, and directly on the ant piles. This is used as needed.

 Plant Perk

  • 15 drops Purification (Young Living blend)
  • 4 oz distilled water

This is great for plants going through transplant shock, or just need a little perking up! Mix before each use, and heavily spray the soil so the roots get a good amount. Purification will also help keep the bugs off and if the plant is indoors it smells good too!
