Getting Started with the No-Poo Method

I am a member of some great no-poo groups on Facebook, but many of them are really strict about no essential oils. Anyone who knows me knows that oils are a big part of my life, but I have respected the group rules. In an oil group, that I am a member of I asked about No-Poo to find people interested but so far little experience. So we decided to make a new group for people interested in no-poo and essential oils. Personally, I want to incorporate all non-toxic beauty but for right now the focus is no-poo.

This is just basic information to give you a starting point.

Important Information:

I am not an expert, this post is mostly based on my own experience and trial and error. What works for one person may not work for another.

Your water type, hair type, PH, and overall health can affect your no-poo method results. It can take experimenting to find the best results and you may have to do some research. I am pretty lucky. There is pretty good water where I live and I was low poo before going all out no poo. If you use lots of shampoo you may need to start low poo first for an easier transition.

Getting Started:

  • If you use shampoo, your hair is addicted to it. Your body creates something called Sebum that cleans your hair and keeps it healthy. Shampoo removes the Sebum and replaces it with chemicals. After a while, your hair just can not handle the Sebum and your hair gets that greasy feeling.
  • When you stop using shampoo you have to go through a detox phase. This is often referred to as transitioning. This can take as little as 3 months, but in some cases as long as a year. It took me 3 months but I did not get a good balance for my hair for about 6 months.
  • Once you decide to go no poo, you will want to do your last wash. This is best with a daily clarifying shampoo. This will make the transition easier for you. Keep this around the house too for cleaning your brushes!

Things useful to have:

  • Boar Bristle Brush (Get a cheap one at first for $5 at Walgreens or a local grocery store, and replace it when your hair is done transitioning.)
  • A very fine tooth comb. (I recommend using a lice comb because they are made for removing nits from hair, and will remove waxy buildup from your hair.
  • Glass SpraBottle
  • Dry shampoo (link is to DIY homemade one)
  • A science lab in your bathroom (I kid, but sometimes it will look like that)
  • Hair Oil (Link to the recipe I use)
  • A washing method (I prefer baking soda but this will not work for everyone)

I am more of a water only method, but every now and then I need to to a baking soda wash. Since I knew from the start that I wanted water only I tried to do that as much as I could from the time I started.

  • Before my shower, I start my haircare.  I use a “hair oil” once a week. I brush my hair with the Boar Hair Brush, massage the hair oil into my scalp, then use the lice comb to move the Sebum, and oil down the length of my hair. I use two intense oils so I try to use the oil sparingly and never let it set it long. If it ever feels uncomfortable I use fractionated coconut oil or Argon Oil.
  • Use the lice comb to remove excess oil, buildup, and ick from your hair. You will want a washcloth or something to wipe the ick off the comb. In the beginning, this will be gross, but after a while, it won’t be bad at all.
  • Rinse your hair daily with the hottest water you can stand. If you are using the hair oil, you do not want to get that in your eyes so be VERY careful! If needed do your wash, and rinse again with cold water.
  • While transitioning I “washed” weekly with a baking soda wash. I used 1/4th teaspoon baking soda with a jar full of water. I pour this over my hair, massaging my scalp and hair. I follow this with a coffee rinse to keep my hair from getting too dry and it seems to help with dandruff too!
  • For a coffee rinse, I save the last little bits from the coffee pot in a jar until I am ready to use it. I still do this once a week, but only wash once every 3 months now. You can also use apple cider vinegar but for me, the coffee works just as good without the smell.
  • Lately, I have started using a Tea Rise too. I use Sleepy Time Tea. I heat the tea as normal (No sugar or milk too!) I use this when my hair is getting a little oily or after a scalp scrub or hair oil treatment. I pour the warm (not hot) tea into wet hair and “lather” my hair. Rinse the tea out with cold water.
  • I have recently learned that every now and then you will want to exfoliate your scalp. I am not sure how often you should do this, and I am still learning, but I have done one. A lot of web pages say to use coffee grounds but this is really bad for your drains so I use large grain salt or sugar and make a scrub with applesauce.   • I recently also started using something called Mermaid Hair every morning! I love this stuff and find my hair feels cleaner since using it!

I use this recipe as is, but I also fill the bottle half up with water, because my hair seems to like that better.

Other things:

These are things I have heard are really good but have not used yet:

  • egg wash
  • soap nuts
  • Indian or African shampoo bars

I am always looking to expand my knowledge! This year my focus is going to be on essential oils in general. I am even wanting to look into aromatherapy classes this year. In Young Living, this is the most recommended reference book! Reference Guide for Essential Oils, 2017 Edition I can not tell you how you how excited I was to get this book!

Essential Oils for a healthier life!

  • Essential Oils For Weight Loss: Your Guide To Kickstart Your Weight Loss With Essential Oils (weight loss strategies, weight loss tips) (Volume 1) I loved this book! I got the ebook copy of it, and I do not see that offered any longer but I really did learn a lot from this book! I knew Lemon, Peppermint, and Grapefruit were great for weight management, but this taught me beyond those 3 oils!
  • Oil Pulling: Oil Pulling Therapy- Detoxify, Heal & Transform your Body through Oil Pulling (Natural Remedies, Oil Pulling, Oral Health, Coconut Oil, Oral Cleansing) This book was okay but I am not sure I am sold on oil pulling. If you want to learn more this is a great place to start.
  • Essential Oils for Dogs: Natural Remedies and Natural Dog Care Made Easy: Includes Essential Oils for Puppies and K9’s This is a good starting point for essential oils and pets, but I would not call this a reference book.
  • Essential Oils For Beginners: The Little Known Secrets to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy for Weight Loss, Beauty and Healing I am only halfway through this book and I am very happy with it! This is great for a beginner and someone who wants to learn more about essential oils. Pull out pen and paper you will want to take notes!

Gardening Books:

  • Container Gardening For Dummies I bought a hard copy of this. I have not read it cover to cover yet, but I do love what I have read!
  • How to Grow Potatoes: Planting and Harvesting Organic Food From Your Patio, Rooftop, Balcony, or Backyard Garden (Booklet) I bought the Kindle version of this book. This book is for people who have never grow potatoes before. (That was me!) This book also has the plans for a great potato box. I think that is the box we are using this year too!

No bad books, but not as exciting as others

  • Essential Oils: A Beginner’s Guide Revealing the Power of Essential Oils This book was not bad. It uses the British method of essential oils and I have different thoughts on that. (British says no internal use) Other than that is has some good basic info and good info for use of essential oils in beauty. I think I got a copy that was two books in one, and I was way less interested in the second book.
  • Aromatherapy and Essential Oils: A Beginners Guide (Lifestyle Guides Book 6) This book was not bad, at times it is a little overwhelming. It is worth the price if you can not afford a more complete book. Personally, I would save up and get a guide.
  • ESSENTIAL OILS:: Essential oils and Aromatherapy Healthy Recipes Guide for Weight Loss, Healing and Beauty (Essential Oils for Beginners, Healing, Stress Relief, Aromatherapy for all Occasions) This was a lot like any other beginner guides. It has good safety warnings, and great carrier oil info but past that the recipes are pretty average and the info about the oils is limited.
  • Essential Oils: A Guide to Using Essential Oils for Stress Reduction, Aromatherapy and Personal Care Pretty much like the other really basic books but it does touch briefly on essential oils and children. The other books do not even bring this up. I think this may also be a British Method book but I am not sure. One thing that bothered me is that it says to add oil to bath water. Oil and water don’t mix, you need a bath salt or something to mix with a bath.

Books I have but have not read yet!

Please note I have not read these yet, I can not say how good or bad they are yet, I honestly hope they are all good. I will update this as I read them!

Books that turned out to be disappointing:

  • 10 Essential Oils That Gave Me Freedom: How To Use Them And My Personal Story! (18 Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes To Go Chemical-Free with Essential Oils Book 2) This turned out to be a big sales pitch for doTerra. I would like to point out I do not have a problem with doTerra but I am not happy that this book is $2.99 for something you can learn for free on many blogs or an oil 101.
  • Essential Oils: A Guide to Improving Your Mental Well-Being with Essential Oils Over priced for VERY basic info. This one is not worth your time or money. 

DIY warming muscle rub

I recently have learned just how out of shape I am. My whole body hurts and my muscles ache. I tend to react better to warming pain relief than cooling pain relief. Most pain creams and oils have wintergreen and that is one I do not care for. I wanted something that was warming, I can use Panaway later if I need cooling relief.

So I started searching the web, and I found several recipes I like, and because I can never just make a recipe the way it is written I have cobbled together this one and giving it a test! I may tweak this later, because I do not have one of the oils, and I need balm like today. I am totally adding Juniper to my next order!

  • 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 tablespoon cayenne pepper (yes from your pantry)
  • 2 tablespoons fluid oz shea butter
  • 1/2 tablespoon beeswax pellets
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 15 drops eucalyptus globulus essential oil
  • 10 drops copaiba essential oil
  • 10 drops juniper essential oil (adding on batch 2)

Optional: Some wintergreen (maybe 5 drops). Wintergreen is an oil you have to be careful with so before you add it, be sure you read up on it or are familiar with it.

Variation: Add extra beeswax to make a bar. I plan on trying this once I am happy with the oil mix ratio. I am not sure how much yet but if you have made lotion bars you may be able to wing it!

Steps to make:

A word of warning: coconut oil has a VERY low smoking point, and you do not want to breathe the fumes from cayenne pepper. I recommend using a facemask, or you will be pepper spraying yourself.

This was my first attempt. I used more cayenne, but it was strained out

 

  1. Over a very low heat or in a double broiler heat the coconut oil and cayenne. You want to use a non-porous pan. I prefer glass pans and metal utensils. You will want to stir this the whole time. The cayenne will try tp stick to the pan, and that is something you will want to prevent. Do not let it smoke, heat the mix over the lowest heat possible.
  2. Once the oil changes color (took about 20-30 minutes) add the beeswax and shea butter. Once these have fully melted remove from heat and let it cool until no longer hot to the touch.
  3. Once the mix is mostly cooled add the essential oils. You do not want the mix hot when you add the oils, you can even wait until it is fully cooled to add the oils.

I could not wait for it to go solid to try it. I am tons of pain right now, so I tried it right away.  This is my new workout buddy!

A note about quality

I use only cosmetic quality shea butter and wax. The links above are the same products I buy. (Links also Amazon affiliate links.) I am not super experienced in making lotions and stuff but I have made some. Every recipe I read say to use cosmetic grade, and I have no reason to question that. I recommend the same.

Homemade Bath Bombs!

Looking for a fun and easy project? Try making Bath Bombs! This turned out to be WAY easier than I expected! It was faster than I expected too!

I made a very small batch just to test the recipe. I am VERY happy with the recipe! I also learned this recipe adjusts very easy. I am sharing the full recipe and if you want to adjust it, you can.

  • 1 Cup Citric Acid
  • 2 Cup Baking Soda
  • 4 tbsp Epsom Salt
  • 1 oz Oil or Shea Butter (Coconut Oil or Shea Butter recommended)
  • Essential Oil (optional)
  • Witch Hazel

I used a solid Shea Butter, and two types of Essential Oil. I used Lavender for nice relaxing baths, and RC to make upper respiratory shower bombs.

Step 1

In a clean dry bowl mix the dry ingredients. If you are using Essential Oils I suggest you use a glass bowl.

Mix the Citric Acid, Baking Soda, and Epsom Salts. I used my hands to get it evenly mixed. Then add the oil. Coconut oil, Shea Butter, or even Grape Seed Oil. Since I used a brick of Shea Butter, it was kinda hard to mix. I suggest you use Coconut Oil or a softer Shea Butter.

This is also where you would add the Essential Oils. The type and grade of oil you use would have a lot to do with the amount oil you use. I use only Young Living Oils, and those are a higher grade and I use less of those. Lighter scents like Lavender I would use more than if I was using a stronger scent. I only used one drop each bomb of the RC because it is so strong.

Once everything is mixed lightly spray the mix with the witch hazel. Use as little as you can to get a texture that will make it stick together.

Firmly pack it into whatever mold you are using. I am using Silicone molds because it seemed easier to get the bath bombs out of. Back it down tight, like brown sugar so you do not get air bubbles in them.

As an experiment, I made two separate and added one drop of RC on top of them.

I let these dry overnight, and tried it out the next night!

OMG, These are awesome! When I made mine, I did not pack them in tight enough and I had big air bubbles. This made them fizz out even faster.

This was a super fun experiment and would be a fun project at spa parties or even just with the kids!

So here is my dirty secret:

For almost a year (March 13th, 2015) I have not used aluminum deodorants. Most days I don’t even wear anything other than essential oils. I do have a stick of Tom’s of Maine that I use maybe once a month. I have some homemade stuff that I use once a week or every two weeks. I do use essential oils daily. I kinda change it up, Peppermint or Citrus Fresh if I need energy. Lavender or tea tree if I skipped a shower the night before. If I think I will have a hard day at work I use the homemade or the Tom’s.

I even survived a Texas Summer with little to no deodorant!

Once I survived the armpit detox I don’t even really smell. I think a change of diet helped. I am on a non-GMO diet. (I try to be.)

But that’s not all…

I stopped using traditional feminine hygiene  products. I tried homemade pads but found them more annoying than anything. I thought I was stuck with toxic stuff forever, then I found THINX. The Period Panty! OMG, these are amazing… I recently found out about ICON by THINX. These are for moms and people with weak bladders. Kids destroy our bladders and after a certain point sneezing is scary! I plan on getting some ICON sometime this year.

Wait, there’s more!

As you know from a recent blog post, I am going NO POO! (No Shampoo) I am not far into this, but so far I am excited! Friday will be two weeks!

So far the only issues I seem to be having is my dandruff is a little worse. I was already expecting that. I have been using Tea Tree oil and vinegar to help with that for over a year now. I am hoping that is enough. I made a spray of Rosemary and Tea Tree that I am spraying into my hair every night before bed. I think it is helping some. I know that my hair will also go through a detox or transition, so let’s see how that goes!

You might think this sounds smelly…

Nope. I actually smell quite good. Thanks to diet and lots of water and proper detoxing I don’t produce a lot of BO. I do bathe, and I am very careful to only use non-toxic soaps. They are also GMO-Free when I can! (I’ve recently learned about Perfectly Posh, and I have heard their soaps are GMO-free!) Since I use essential oils I tend to smell like whatever oils I am using that day. To some people, those may stink.

I was using my Focus Oil that I blend myself, and a pregnant girl at work freaked out. She told me she couldn’t tell if it stank or smelled really good. I kinda felt bad about that, so now I try to not wear it around her.

I just started No Poo, so I have heard hair sometimes stinks, but I am not too worried about that. I have a plan set up for keeping myself fresh while I am transitioning.

What are your dirty secrets? (PS: I would rather be a smelly hippy than call myself crunchy. Isn’t that the term now?) I promise this is a No Judgment blog! I don’t think I could confess the no deodorant or shampoo to people at work, or casual friends. Even my daughter is looked at me weird as she hugged her bottles of shampoo. (I was giving her my old shampoo.) The kids also use nonaluminum deodorant, but I am not sure they know I hardly wear any at all.
