Oral Health Care

This is a post that may not be as popular with a lot of people. I am going to be very honest with you, my reader!

I use Fluoride Toothpaste.

I know you are thinking I am a bad person, but I will explain why later! Until then, here are some things when I was not using Fluoride Toothpaste.

Oil Pulling

Not sure how I feel. Yes, it whitens teeth, if done correctly, it seems to improve your oral health. I did see less plaque on my teeth, and some oils do clean. I used to use coconut oil for 10 minutes, then spit it out and used sunflower oil for 10 minutes. Coconut oil helps clean and could help with infections in the mouth and the sunflower oil made my mouth feel cleaner and made the biggest difference on the plague. Sometimes I used essentials as well. (Peppermint, orange, thieves, or clove)

Review:  Not a big fan. I only do it now if I have a toothache, or notice the plague getting bad. I always have to follow with brushing my teeth too.

Also, I do not buy that it is detoxing your mouth. Anyone who has mixed oils will see that change of color in oils. Try making a homemade mayo sometime and you will see what I mean.

Homemade Toothpaste:

Here is the recipe I like: 1 part baking soda, 2 parts solid coconut oil and a little essential oil. I tend to use a tablespoon. (1 tbs baking soda, 2 tbs coconut oil, 1 drop peppermint oil)

Review: Works good, my mouth always felt clean, and the baking soda whitens. For homemade this was really good.

Flouride Free Toothpaste you can buy

I like the Thieves Aromabright toothpaste. I have nothing bad to say about it and it tastes really good.

We used this for a while, I am not even sure how long (years for me and maybe a year for the rest of the family).

On Going Back to Fluoride

We decided to go back to fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride it absolutely toxic, but you spit it out. We have decided the risk is worth it as we noticed our teeth hurt more and we got gingivitis. I noticed my teeth starting to become more brittle when using fluoride-free options. I could fight the gingivitis but as a family, we feel that fluoride toothpaste works best for us. I have yet to find a brand I would recommend and we are using the lowest cost ADA recommended one for now.

As part of my quest for zero waste I will be changing that, but right now I do not have a zero waste recommendation.

If fluoride free works for you, let me know what brand you use. I have tried a lot and never found one I am really happy with.

I have a family of 5. We buy toothbrushes in bulk. Recently while reading zero waste blogs I realized I never even thought about my toothbrush! I was reading a post written by someone in Hawaii, and she said while walking on the beach she found 14 toothbrushes! That made me sad and disgusted at the same time. We will use the ones we already bought but I am looking into new ones now!

ISince I have such a big family I have to think about price and that is one of the reasons I am looking at this brand. (Also it is Prime, and I feel better using that when I order because I have been a victim of the bait and switch.)
